CULTURE IS BEER– KULTTUURI ON OLUTTA
SELF GUIDED TASTING TOUR.
Some scientist have said that the reason for people to settle down and build permanent living grounds was because of the need for beer. Cultivation of crops for steady consuption of beer, instead of wandering around as hunter-gatherers. We stick to that idea!
Allthough the city of Tampere is already on a good run and the fires of slash and burn culture is ancient history here in Finland we do love our beers. As culture is living and running in our veins. Literally. If you want to see it yourself, please hop along!
1.Please come visit the smallest bar in the city. Starting point for the tour.
Bookers Bar is located in the Tampere Theatre house. Right in the middle of the city (Hämeenkatu 14 B). We will give you information and instructions needed for your tasty trip. Starting with tasting of SAHTI (from the germanic word ”saft” aka ”juice” of barley) one of the oldest beer styles survived. Only made here in Finland. Popular in homes and country houses but sheldomly sold publicly. Sahti is sweet and strong, un-pastorized, un-filtered and as natural as it gets.
2.See the rapids of Tammerkoski and get into Tap House of local Craft Brewery.
After enjoying some Sahti you will pass the main bridge (Hämeensilta) over the rapids of river Tammerkoski which splits the city half. Actually these rapids are the reason why Tampere was built here during the time when foreseeing persons started to build their factories around here. By using running water as a source of energy to run their machines.
It will be a healthy 250 meter walk to Gastropub Nordic, a Tap House for a local craft brewery, Nordic Brewery https://www.gastropub.net/brewery/ . Here you will be served 3 x 1dl tasting of fresh locally brewed beers with some deep-fried brown bread and garlic mayo.
3.Visit the Tapas Bar and cross the Love Bridge.
We’d like to say that our beer is the best, or even that we are the only ones. But that is not the case as you know. Culture is for everyone. That is why we want to give you a steady look at the beer culture around the world.
Let’s start that journey from Tapas Bar INEZ. A modern bar with a great selection of tapas and craft beers from Spain and Portugal.
After having a taste of beers (2 x 1dl + 1 tapa) you will be guided to pass a charming pedestrian bridge over the river again. While passing the bridge which we locals call ”Love Bridge” you will see plenty of locks hanging on it. As memory and guarantee for ever lasting love.
You may also add yours there if you want to. Just remember to bring your own lock or ask one from us when starting your tour.
For the people who some years ago cut and stole a plenty of those locks for their ”art work” purposes we have only one thing to say; We hope that you have gotten over your jealousy for others love, and wish that you’ve found one too.
4.See the main square and get into the wine bar.
Once you have passed the bridge you will enter to a small park area where there is an old Church Chapel and an old Library house. If you want to rest your sore feet that would be the place.
When entering the main square you will see some of the oldest architecture and buildings in Tampere around you. And if you are lucky maybe some of the many changing events held there around the year.
At Deli 1909 & Wine Bar (Puutarhakatu 11) just across the square you have a chance to mix your own beer cocktail from local products. Guided with our staff who will also serve you some appetizers made from local goods.
This beautiful Jugend building has seen a lot. Our beloved Nobel Prize in Literature 1939 winner Frans Emil Sillanpää used to keep this location as his city home at the time when there was a hotel & restaurant still in the house. The hotel where he also stayed over his marriage night is now in the past but the restaurant business still goes on. Many other artists, visitors and happenings have these walls seen. As the house was built by Fennomans during the time when Finland was still under the Russian Emperors rule, it passed World Wars 1 & 2 unharmed and now still serves as it was ment to be. In peace, quality and tranquility.
- Pub with 2 Faces. House with many stories.
A place that also holds many stories and hidden gems is waiting you almost around the corner. Kievari Kahdet Kasvot (Pub with 2 stone faces scupltured on the outer wall) is situated in one of the most interesting places and buildings in Tampere. Built in 1903 it is the only work in Tampere where the world famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen was involved in.
This address, Kauppakatu 14, was a long off the original city limits but has since witnessed many highs and lows. Rooms where the restaurant now is situated for example used to be both home and working rooms for Vera Telenius. Famous singer who only started her succesful singing career in her later years after loosing her sight while working with childrens clothes.
Feel free to walk around the house and restaurant as it is one of the best kept example of National Romantic architecture style. Specially notice all the details carved around. Known from the Kalevala, our national epos.
Tampere is called the Capitol of beer in Finland. Here you will experience some other local craft brewery beers (3 x 1dl) as we have plenty of them to show.
Next door to Kievari Kahdet Kasvot is located Photographic Center Nykyaika. Free admission on weekdays between 12:00 to 18:00. Highly recommended to visit if it suits to your timetable. http://valokuvakeskusnykyaika.fi/
6.Get to the park and Gastropub.
Once stepping out and turning right you will get to the beautiful Hämeenpuisto. A city park that used to be the place for Sunday walks and also guarded the city center from possible city fires during the time when most of Tampere was housed by wooden buildings.
Right there in the corner of Puutarhakatu and Hämeenpuisto is Gastropub Tuulensuu. The first gastropub in Finland, many times chosen as the Best Beer Restaurant in Finland, mentioned in the list of the 50 Best Restaurants in Finland, The Best Beer List in Finland Winner 2018, etc.
Tuulensuu got it’s name from the ancient fields which used to be around here before the city was built. Tuulensuu- Mouth of the Wind.
So after some park life, please get in. We will serve you a aperitif, a three course meal and drinks. All the dishes are designed to match the drinks you are going to experience.
The aperitif will be the official Suomi 100 Finland independence day celebration beer called Havu Nordic Ale. An ale spiced with fresh coniferous branches from Pine, Spruce and Juniper trees. Collected from the forest next to our Nordic Brewery. https://100hyvaasuomesta.fi/
The starter and main course will be served with international beers suited to your chosen dish (meat/fish/vegetable/vegan). With your dessert we will serve you a house digestif.
After the dinner we welcome you to stay in our premises or wish you a pleasant evening in the city. Followed by a small gift, a jar of locally made wild berry jam.
Thank you for your company and travelling in our footsteps.
You will find us also from the DesignOn Tampere map. DesignOn Tampere is association which promotes design and city culture in Tampere. While on your tour you will pass by many of these interesting spots. If interested, please check www.designontampere.com
